China Brain Chip Implant: China has won in the matter of implanting a chip in the brain. According to reports, doctors in Shanghai have commercially implanted a brain-computer interface (BCI) into a patient’s brain for the first time. This patient has suffered a spinal cord injury and with the help of the chip, he has now been able to move his hands. With this, the chip implanted in the brain has now come out of clinical trials and is being used in the real world. American businessman Elon Musk’s company Neuralink is also making a chip to be implanted in the brain. It is still in the trial stage.
Surgery done in Shanghai
According to media reports, surgery to implant this chip was done at Huashan Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai. The patient in whom this chip was implanted had a car accident about a decade ago. Due to spinal cord injury, his hands had stopped working. Now a team of several doctors has implanted a brain computer interface (chip implanted in the brain) named Neural Electronic Opportunity (NEO) in his brain. It is being told that after the surgery, the patient’s condition remains stable and tests have shown that this chip is capturing high-quality brain signals.
What is NEO system?
This brain chip named NEO has been created by Neural Technology in collaboration with Tsinghua University. It has been designed to help paralyzed patients to be able to walk again. It got approval for commercial use in March. It is a coin-sized device, which is placed on the surface of the brain. It catches the signal coming from the brain and converts it into a command for the external device. That is, when a patient thinks of moving his hand in his mind, this device will catch that signal and send it to the computer, which will give commands to a robotic glove. In this way, people unable to walk will also be able to do some of their daily work.
Neuralink is also doing trials
Elon Musk’s company Neuralink is also working on similar technology. Neuralink chip has been implanted in many patients as a clinical trial. This chip has been named Telepathy. With its help, patients can control smartphones, computers and other digital devices through their thoughts.
