Shubman Gill created history: Captain Shubman Gill has created history by playing a captaincy inning of 80 runs in the first ODI against England. Gill has scored 510 runs in Edgbaston, making him the first Indian captain to score 500 runs on a single ground in England. He broke Virat Kohli’s record and joined the exclusive club of legends like Gavaskar, Dhoni, Rohit.

In the first match of the three-match ODI series between India and England (IND vs ENG), the Indian team came out to chase the target of 259 runs. 26-year-old right-handed opening batsman and captain Shubman Gill led from the front. He played an excellent inning of 80 runs in 75 balls at the Edgbaston ground in Birmingham. However, he could not convert his innings into a century as due to muscle cramps he had to retire hurt and go out of the field.

During his aggressive and composed innings of 80 runs, Gill hit brilliant shots all around the field. He hit 11 fours and a skyscraper six in his innings. Thanks to the 80 runs scored in this match, Shubman Gill has completed his 500 international runs as captain at the Edgbaston ground of England. He has become the first captain of India to score 500 or more runs on any one ground in England. After this historic achievement, his total number of international runs at Edgbaston has now reached 510.

With scoring 510 runs at Edgbaston, Shubman Gill has joined the list of select Indian captains in the world who have scored 500 or more runs in a single stadium. Before Gill, only six Indian captains were able to achieve this feat, which include the names of Sunil Gavaskar, Mohammad Azharuddin, MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli. Gill has now become the seventh member of this exclusive club.

Mohammad Azharuddin holds the record for scoring the most runs as an Indian captain on a single ground in world cricket. Azharuddin scored 954 runs in 29 innings of 32 matches at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium between 1990 and 1999, in which his highest score was 108 runs. Virat Kohli is at second place in this list, who has scored 680 runs with the highest score of 254 not out in 10 innings at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

While captaining, MS Dhoni scored 646 runs in 12 innings at Jamtha Stadium in Nagpur and 645 runs in 21 innings at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur (Dhaka). Rohit Sharma has added 630 runs in 14 innings at Dubai International Stadium. Azharuddin has scored 627 runs at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, Sourav Ganguly has scored 565 runs at Bangabandhu Stadium, Dhaka, Sunil Gavaskar has scored 554 runs at Wankhede, Mumbai and Virat Kohli has scored 515 runs at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Gill now stands in line with these greats at Edgbaston with 510 runs.

Shubman Gill played his first Test match as captain at the Edgbaston ground in July 2025, where he scored a huge score of 269 runs in the first innings and 161 runs in the second innings. However, the world record for scoring the most runs as a captain on a single ground is in the name of former Australian legend Allan Border, who scored 1,670 runs in 48 innings of 48 matches at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The form Gill is in, he can go higher in this list in future.
