Brendon McCullum stepped down from the post of coach of the Test team.
New Delhi. A big change has been seen in English cricket. Only a few days have passed since Test captain Ben Stokes retired from international cricket and now head coach Brendon McCullum has also separated from the Test team. McCullum, who led the ‘Baseball’ era for four years, will now be the head coach of England’s ODI and T20 teams only. Yes, McCullum has decided to part ways with the England Test team. England recorded many memorable victories under McCullum as head coach. However, the England and Wales Cricket Board has started the search for a new Test head coach.
McCullum’s Test tenure ends after four years
Brendon McCullum was made the head coach of the England Test team in May 2022. The ECB expressed confidence in McCullum after the departure of then coach Chris Silverwood after a shameful 4-0 defeat in the Ashes series in Australia. Along with captain Ben Stokes, he developed a new concept of aggressive cricket, which the world came to know as ‘Bazball’.
Many memorable victories during McCullum’s era
The beginning of McCullum’s tenure was excellent. England defeated New Zealand 3-0. After this, it won the home Test series against South Africa and created history by defeating Pakistan 3-0 on its soil. This was the first time that England made a clean sweep of a Test series in Pakistan. In the year 2023, England drew the home Ashes series 2-2, but had to face defeat on the tour of India.
Defeat in Ashes became a big reason
The Ashes series of 2025-26 was very disappointing for England. The team had to face 4-1 defeat at the hands of Australia. Along with this, questions were also raised regarding the indiscipline of the dressing room and the alleged drinking culture of the players. Although, in the initial review, both Stokes and McCullum remained in their respective positions, but after Stokes’ retirement the ECB decided to make changes in the Test team.
Now McCullum will be the coach of only the white-ball team
44-year-old Brendon McCullum will focus entirely on England’s limited overs teams. Recently, under his coaching, England defeated India 4-0 in the T20 series. McCullum said in his statement that it was an honor for him to coach the Test team. He thanked the players, support staff and fans and said that he was disappointed by the decision, but respected it. He said that now his entire focus will be on taking the white-ball team to new heights.
What did the ECB say?
ECB Chief Executive Officer Richard Gould said that Brendon McCullum breathed new life into the England Test team and led many memorable victories. He said, ‘Now in view of the preparations for Ashes 2027, the need for new leadership has been felt for the Test team.’ England men’s team managing director Rob Key also praised McCullum’s contribution, saying that he changed the mindset of the team and gave the young players the confidence to play fearless cricket.
Search for new test head coach begins
ECB has officially started the process of appointing a new Test head coach. In the coming days, we may see the beginning of a new era in England cricket. Now whenever the England team plays a Test match, a new captain and coach will be seen in their dressing room. Cricket lovers are waiting to know who will be the new Test head coach of England.
