India had maintained the number-1 position in the T20 rankings for more than four and a half years, but the 4-0 defeat against England broke this sequence. Before the series, England needed a clean sweep to become number-1 and they accomplished this task with great ease.
Butler-Brook made India helpless
In the last T20, Jos Buttler and captain Harry Brook thrashed the Indian bowlers. Both of them made a record partnership of 233 runs for the second wicket. Butler played an explosive inning of 131 runs in 64 balls, while Brook played a strong unbeaten inning of 95 runs. With this, England made a huge score of 257 runs in 20 overs and limited India to 201 runs.
India failed in every department
Throughout the series, India’s batting struggled on the fast and bouncy pitches of England. The top order failed to give consistent starts. Even the bowlers could not make an impact in the last match, while many mistakes were seen in fielding. This was the reason why India could not win even a single match. The first match was canceled due to rain.
Questions on Iyer’s captaincy and Gambhir’s coaching
This series was the first big test of Shreyas Iyer’s T20 captaincy, but the team did not live up to expectations. During the tenure of head coach Gautam Gambhir, India has already lost ODI series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, while the performance in Test cricket was also disappointing. Now the 4-0 defeat in the T20 series against England has also raised questions on the strategy of the team management.
