The new UDISE Plus 2025-26 report of the Ministry of Education has come out regarding the condition of schools in the country. According to the report, on an average 13 schools were closed every day throughout the year. Maximum schools have been closed in Madhya Pradesh. The number of students has also decreased in many states, while new schools have also been opened in some states.
4,791 schools closed across the country
According to the report, a total of 4,791 schools were closed across India during 2025-26. This means that on an average 13 schools were closed every day. The total number of schools in the country decreased from 14,71,473 to 14,66,682. Maximum 2,426 schools were closed in Madhya Pradesh. It was followed by Telangana, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh.
New schools opened in some states
While the number of schools decreased in many states, new schools were started in Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Delhi. 946 new schools were added in Bihar, 234 in Chhattisgarh and 87 in Delhi. However, there was a decrease in student enrollment in these states.
There was also a decline in the number of students
According to the report, the enrollment of more than 4.37 lakh students decreased in Bihar the most. Apart from this, the number of students also decreased in Chhattisgarh and Delhi as compared to last year. It is clear from this that schools increased in many states, but the number of students studying in them remained less.

Schools without students reduced for the first time
A matter of relief also emerged in the report. For the first time, the number of such schools has decreased in which not even a single student was studying. In 2024-25, there were 7,993 such schools, which have now reduced to 5,663. However, 20,667 teachers are still working in these schools.
Figures from Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal also raise concerns.
The number of schools without students in West Bengal has increased to 4,133, where thousands of teachers are deployed. Whereas in Uttar Pradesh the number of such schools increased from 81 to 313. The number of teachers posted in these schools has also increased. For the first time in Chhattisgarh also, 149 such schools were registered where no student is enrolled.
The UDISE Plus 2025-26 report shows that both the number of schools and student enrollment are changing in many places in the country. New schools are opening in some states, while schools are closing in many states. In such a situation, there is a need to take effective steps to strengthen the education system and connect students with schools.
