How is Gorilla Glass made?
Making Gorilla Glass starts with silicon dioxide, also known as ordinary sand. Silicon dioxide and some other minerals are melted at very high temperatures to form glass. Then this sand is mixed with many other chemicals and melted again, which forms Aluminosilicate glass. Aluminosilicate is poured into a groove until it begins to overflow. After this a machine makes sheets of this glass. After this process is completed, heated salt is poured into this glass. Due to this, sodium ions are removed from the glass and larger potassium ions replace them. Then when the glass cools down, a compressive layer is formed on its surface.
How can a thin glass provide so much protection?
The glass made through this process is very thin. Its thickness is 0.3-0.5mm, but a cushion-like layer is formed on both its side edges, which is not visible. This layer gives flexibility to this Gorilla Glass. Due to this, if the phone falls hard, this layer absorbs the shock instead of breaking completely. Therefore the chances of this glass breaking are less. This glass not only protects the screen from breaking but also gives complete protection from scratches.
Gorilla Glass is getting competition from Ceramic Shield
Gorilla Glass is manufactured by a company named Corning. Ceramic Shield, another product of the same company, is giving tough competition to this glass. Companies like Samsung and Apple use both these products. Regarding Ceramic Shield, both Apple and Corning claim that it is stronger than other protective glasses. It is prepared by embedding ceramic nanocrystals in glass.
