Deaths Outnumber Births In England And Wales: A major change has come to light regarding population in England and Wales. Latest estimates show that now the number of people dying there is more than the number of children born there. The Center for Social Justice, a think tank working on social issues, has named this change as “Death Day”. The organization says that this is not just a figure, but an indication of the big demographic challenge of the future.
death toll higher
According to the estimates of the Office for National Statistics, from July 2026, the number of deaths every year in England and Wales will start exceeding births. 2025-26 is believed to be the last financial year when the number of children born was marginally higher. It is estimated that about 5.84 lakh children will be born during 2026-27, while about 5.88 lakh people may die during the same period.
What is the reason behind this?
It has been said in the telegraph report that it is believed that the biggest reason behind this is the continuously decreasing birth rate. Compared to before, couples now want to have fewer children or are delaying starting a family. Reasons like expensive houses, increasing expenses on raising children, pressure of working life and lack of flexible work options are also influencing this decision. Apart from this, many women want to focus on their career first, while the age of marriage and motherhood is also continuously increasing.
Why are people taking such steps?
CSG says that if this situation continues, it may have serious consequences both socially and economically in the coming years. Edward Davis, research director of the organization, says that this situation has arisen due to families not getting adequate support. He believes that even those who want to become parents are not able to fulfill their dreams due to increasing expenses and changing circumstances.

Unable to do so due to economic and social reasons
According to the report, between 2024 and 2034, there are expected to be about 4.5 lakh more deaths than births in the whole of Britain. Another analysis says that there may be about 30 lakh women aged between 16 to 45 who will not have children. This number is about six lakh more than that of previous generations. Experts are calling it a situation of “missing parents”, where despite wanting to start a family, people are unable to do so due to economic and social reasons.
Population continuously falling since 2010
The birth rate in Britain has been falling continuously since 2010. The birth of about 5.85 lakh children was recorded in the year 2025, which is less than the previous year and is considered to be the lowest level since 1977. The average number of children per woman has also reduced to around 1.4, whereas to keep the population of a country stable, this figure should be around 2.1. The average age of women becoming mothers for the first time has also increased to 29.6 years.
