WhatsApp is preparing to bring ‘Username’ feature for its users soon, but the Government of India has sent a notice to Meta even before its launch. The government says that by misusing this feature, cyber thugs can make people their victims. For this reason, the government has sought answers from Meta and said that until satisfactory answers to all the questions are received, this feature should not be launched in India.
Why did the government take this step?
WhatsApp was preparing to bring such a feature on its platform in which users can connect through username instead of mobile number. It is believed that this may improve privacy, but the government has raised questions on some of its possible risks.
Answer sought from Meta
According to sources, the government has instructed Meta to provide complete information related to this feature within three days. It has also been asked to clarify how the username system will work and what effect it can have on security.

Government expressed concern
In this matter, the government says that this feature may increase the cases of online fraud and phishing. Apart from this, there may be an increase in cases of cyber fraud like digital arrest. The government also believes that if a person creates a username similar to someone else’s name or an institution like a government department, bank, then it will become easier to cheat people.
What is special in WhatsApp feature
The purpose of the username feature is said to be to give users the option to connect with others without making the mobile number public. This may enable many people to limit their personal information. However, for now everyone’s eyes will be on Meta’s response and the government’s next review. If the feature is considered safe after discussion and investigation, then a decision can be taken on its launch in India in future. At present the situation regarding the introduction of this feature is not clear.
