Mini Stroke: The habit of staying awake all night will take you closer to death, the risk of mini stroke is increasing, expert warns

How Sleep Deprivation Increases Mini Stroke Risk: In today’s busy life, even night time is not the same as before. The mobile screen keeps glowing till after midnight, people check work emails while lying in bed and scroll through social media without even realizing when the night has passed. This has now become a normal lifestyle, especially for young professionals. But neurologists are warning that this habit can not only increase fatigue but can also increase serious risks like mini stroke.

What is mini stroke?

Mini stroke, which in medical language is called transient ischemic attack, occurs when blood flow stops in some part of the brain for some time. Its symptoms may disappear within a few minutes, but taking it lightly can prove to be a big mistake. According to the US National Institutes of Health, about one in three people who have a transient ischemic attack will go on to have a stroke, and about half of these cases occur within a year.

Why does sleep cause this problem?

Dr Chandana R Gowda told TOI that lack of sleep is fast becoming a major cause of neurological and heart related problems. He says that due to continuous lack of sleep, the level of stress hormones in the body remains high, blood pressure is affected, swelling increases and metabolism deteriorates. All these factors together can increase the risk of mini stroke and subsequent stroke.

Why is good sleep important?

According to experts, good sleep not only gives rest to the body but also helps in repairing blood vessels, controlling blood pressure and reducing swelling. When there is insufficient sleep continuously, these important systems of the body start getting affected. Research by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute has also shown that prolonged lack of sleep increases the risk of high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and heart diseases, which are considered the main causes of stroke.

What is Revenge Bedtime Procrastination?

A new term has also come into discussion in recent years, called revenge bedtime procrastination. This means intentionally staying up late to take time for yourself after a long day at work, when the body needs rest. According to Dr. Gowda, using the phone till late night, continuously watching the screen and sleeping only for a few hours has become a habit of many youth today, which can cause serious health problems in the future.

What are its symptoms?

The biggest problem of mini stroke is that its signs are often ignored. Its initial symptoms can be sudden weakness or numbness in one part of the body, difficulty in speaking, dizziness, blurred vision, face leaning to one side or confusion lasting for a few minutes. Experts say that any such sign should not be ignored and a doctor should be contacted immediately.
