1000 sixes hit in 53 matches… The record of sixes broken in Chennai, 2 year old record destroyed

New Delhi. The 19th edition of IPL wrote a new chapter in the history of cricket on Sunday. The match played between Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants at MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk), Chennai, not only reached the pinnacle of thrill, but this match did something which had never happened in the last 18 years. In this 53rd match of IPL, as soon as the ball crossed the boundary, the entire stadium welcomed this historic moment with noise. This was the 1,000th six of this season.

This is the first time in the history of IPL that 1,000 sixes have been hit in just 53 matches. Earlier this record was in the name of the year 2024, when this thousandth figure of sixes was touched in the 57th match. The 2026 season is proving to be the most explosive season due to the aggression of the batsmen and efficient use of the ‘Impact Player’ rule.

Urvil Patel’s new chapter in records
The real hero of this historical milestone was Gujarat’s right-handed wicketkeeper-batsman Urvil Patel. While playing for CSK, Urvil created havoc as soon as he entered the field. When the team needed a big target, Urvil targeted Lucknow spinner Digvesh Rathi. Urvil changed the atmosphere by hitting three skyscraper sixes and a four off four balls of Rathi. The last six of these was 98 meters long, which fell into the stands over deep mid-wicket. This was the ‘milestone hit’ which completed 1,000 sixes of the season.

The match started with a spectacular performance by LSG. Josh English batted stormily in the first innings and scored 85 runs in just 33 balls. Thanks to his innings, Lucknow had scored 77 runs without any loss in the first 5 overs. A total of 27 sixes were hit in the entire match, out of which 6 came from English’s bat alone. However, Chennai bowler Jamie Overton turned the match around by dismissing Josh Inglis and Rishabh Pant in the same over. After this, Noor Ahmed’s economical bowling and excellent fielding restricted Lucknow to 203 runs, whereas at one time they were seen going beyond 230.

CSK’s historic win and Dubey’s finishing touch
Chennai, chasing the target of 204 runs, had the match within its grasp in the powerplay itself. Thanks to Urvil Patel’s attack, CSK scored 91/1 in the first 6 overs, which is the highest powerplay score in the history of the franchise. The match got a bit stuck after Urvil’s dismissal, but ‘Sixer King’ Shivam Dubey batted as per his reputation. In the end, when runs were needed to win, Dubey hit two consecutive sixes and gave the team a spectacular victory by 5 wickets. Along with him, Prashant Veer also handled the innings in a professional style. This victory of Chennai has strengthened them in the points table, but this match will always be remembered for the ‘Sixer Record’ and that incredible innings of Urvil Patel which changed the definition of T20 cricket.
