NCERT’s Class 9 Social Science book has become a topic of discussion these days. In this book, information is given about the role of women and social system in the society of old India. Besides, a reference to Manusmriti has also been added to it. The book also tells about the changes that have taken place in both the status of women and society over time.
In this book of class 9, it is told that in Vedic times, women were given respectable status. Women studied, participated in religious activities and also expressed their views at many places. Some such women have also been mentioned in the book, whose names are found in old texts.
In this book, a line from Manusmriti, ‘Yatra Naryastu Pujyante Ramante Tatra Devta’, that is, where women are respected, the gods reside there, has been included. It talks about respect for women. It is also clearly written in this that the status of women has not been the same at all times. Changes occurred with time. The changes in the role of women with changing times have also been explained in the chapter. It has been told that as changes took place in society and politics, the status of women also changed. His participation reduced for some time, but he continued to contribute to home, farming, work and society.

Chapter named ‘India and the World’ was also added
In this book of class 9, there is a chapter named ‘India and the World’, in which information about the Vedic period is given. In this lesson, it has been told about the strong position of women in that period and that at that time women had full right to education. Women were participants in every important work of the society and could choose their husband as per their own wish. It has also been told that women were given equal rights as men in the society. Even before this, this book was much discussed, when SIR and elections were praised.
There was controversy in Delhi University also
This chapter has been brought when recently there was a lot of controversy over the proposal to teach Manusmriti in the Law Faculty of Delhi University (DU). There was a lot of opposition to this decision and then the Vice Chancellor of DU rejected that proposal. Ultimately, Manusmriti was not included in the curriculum. Now the controversy may increase due to its mention in the NCERT school book.
