- Apple used a lightweight titanium frame in the iPhone 15 Pro.
- The main challenge was to reduce the increasing weight of the Pro models.
- iPhone X uses stainless steel for strength and premium look.
iPhone Stainless Steel: Apple made a major change in the design when it launched the iPhone 15 Pro series in 2023. The company had removed the stainless steel frame used from iPhone X to iPhone 14 Pro and replaced it with a titanium frame. Later in 2025, with the iPhone 17 Pro models, Apple moved beyond titanium and adopted an aluminum chassis. The question is, why did Apple make such a big change? Let us know the whole story behind this.
Increasing weight becomes the biggest challenge
Apple did not officially explain why it abandoned stainless steel but at the time of the launch of the iPhone 15 Pro, the company clarified that aerospace-grade titanium is strong as well as light. This was the reason why the iPhone 15 Pro models were among the lightest Pro iPhone models till that time.
In fact, the weight of the Pro models was increasing with each new generation. Phones were becoming heavy due to larger displays, larger batteries and extra camera hardware. Users started feeling this weight after using the phone for a long time. In such a situation, it became necessary for Apple to choose light but strong material.
Why was stainless steel chosen in the iPhone
Apple introduced all-screen design for the first time with the iPhone At that time the main focus of the company was on strength and premium look. The stainless steel frame with glass panels on the front and back gave more strength to the phone and also gave it a luxury feel.
Later in 2020, Apple changed the design again and replaced the curved edges with flat edges, reminiscent of the old iPhone 4. This change was mainly made to make the phone look more attractive and advanced.
How did titanium change the picture?
After the introduction of titanium frame in the iPhone 15 Pro series, there was a significant reduction in weight. iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max became much lighter than their older models.
The biggest advantage of titanium was that despite being as strong as stainless steel, it is much lighter than it. This maintained the strength of the phone and also provided a more comfortable usage experience.
