- Australia introduced new strategy to promote AI.
- The main goals are data investment, security and skill development.
- Only existing laws will be used for AI risks.
- AI security institute will be formed in 2026, strict rules will be imposed.
AI: Australia has revealed its new national strategy regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI). In December last year, the government had presented a roadmap whose objective is to promote rapid adoption and use of AI technology across the country. The government also made it clear that only the existing legal framework will be used to deal with the possible threats and challenges related to AI.
Three big goals to promote AI
The new plan of the Australian government mainly focuses on three important areas. First, to invest heavily in advanced data centers so that a strong base of AI based services and technologies can be created. Second, to ensure public safety amid the increasing use of AI. Third, to teach people new capabilities related to AI so that future jobs can be protected and the work force can be prepared for new technology.
The government believes that AI is not only a means of technological development but it can also become an important source of economic growth and new employment opportunities for the country.
AI will be controlled on the basis of old laws
The government has indicated that at present no completely new law will be brought to control AI. Instead, the threats related to AI will be controlled on the basis of existing rules and legal systems.
Government officials say that Australia already has strong laws which will be made more effective according to the new challenges arising due to AI.
AI Safety Institute will be built in 2026
The government had announced in May that a special AI Safety Institute would be established in the year 2026. The main work of this institute will be to monitor the threats posed by Generative AI and other emerging AI technologies.
This institute will help government agencies in identifying upcoming threats, assessing their impact and designing effective measures to deal with them.
Pressure may increase on AI companies
The impact of the new strategy will not be limited to government policies only. In future, age-based restrictions can also be implemented on AI platforms like social media. Additionally, companies providing AI services such as openai.com and gemini.google.com may have to add stronger safety measures to their models.
