Password Vs Passkey: If you are using passwords to protect your device or accounts, then this method has become outdated. The passwords, introduced in 1961, have now been ‘retired’. The UK’s National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) has said that it will no longer recommend using passwords to stay safe. This is the first time that a major intelligence agency has retired the password. NCSC has said that now people should use passkey for online safety. Let us know what a passkey is and why its use is being advised.
What is Passkey?
A Public Key and a Private Key together create a Passkey. That is, Passkey will create a unique pair of digital credentials from the physical security key of your phone, laptop and other devices. One of these will be stored on your device, while the other is shared on websites etc. After this your device will authenticate your identity through fingerprint, face scan or screen lock. For this you will neither need to remember any password nor will you need to type anything.
How is Passkey better than password?
- NCSC says that passkey is faster than password. Logging in using a passkey is eight times faster than typing a password.
- It is difficult to guess the passkey. The password can be guessed, but this cannot be the case with the passkey. Therefore the fear of phishing scams is eliminated.
- NCSC believes that OTP is not required in the passkey. Therefore, companies can save crores of rupees in sending messages.
- Strong passwords have to use many numbers, letters and special characters, which can be difficult to remember. Passkey removes this hassle also. There is no need to remember anything in this.
Companies are also emphasizing on passkey
Apart from NCSC, now many companies have also started emphasizing on passkey. Actually, amid increasing cases of cyber crime, passwords are not providing complete security. Therefore, now a new method of login is being tried. Microsoft has long ago removed password support from its Authenticator app and added passkey support to it. Similarly, Amazon is also insisting on using passkey.
