Mumbai. Chennai Super Kings batting coach Michael Hussey clearly said that whenever MS Dhoni returns from his calf injury, he will play only as a wicketkeeper. Not just as an ‘impact player’. 44-year-old Dhoni could not play his seventh consecutive match of IPL 2026 in the match against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.
He is still recovering from the injury which forced him out of the team for two weeks on March 28. There was talk that Dhoni could make a comeback only as a batsman using the ‘Impact Player’ rule, especially with Sanju Samson and Karthik Sharma available as wicketkeeping options. Hussey rejected this possibility and said that Dhoni will return to his old role behind the wicket.

During the match, Hussey told the broadcaster, ‘I am sure he will be behind the wicket. The biggest thing for him is that he has suffered a calf injury. The problem is only in running. If he comes to bat in the last overs of the innings, he will have to take one or two runs quickly. He just has to see that his calf is strong enough to withstand this pressure.
