What is DME gas?
DME i.e. Dimethyl Ether is a type of clean fuel which can be prepared from coal, biomass or natural gas. This gas releases very little smoke when burnt and produces almost no soot. For this reason it is being seen as clean fuel.
How is it different from LPG?
While LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) can blacken utensils when burnt and also cause some amount of pollution, DME gas burns cleanly. This keeps the kitchen clean and there is no problem of soot accumulation on the utensils. Additionally, DME is also considered relatively easy to store and transport. Many experts believe that if its production starts on a large scale, its price can be lower than LPG.
Will DME really be cheaper?
The biggest advantage of DME is its potentially low cost. It can also be made from local resources which will reduce dependence on imports. If this happens then consumers can get cheaper gas and the country’s expenses will also reduce. However, this technology is still in its initial stage and infrastructure is yet to be prepared for its use on a large scale.

DME gas is also considered better from environmental point of view. It creates less pollution when burnt and emissions of greenhouse gases are also less. In such a situation, it can prove to be a big step towards clean energy. At present, research and testing on DME gas is going on. Its use has also started on a limited scale in some countries, but it may take time for it to reach the common people in India.
