A study published in JAMA Network Open on April 17, 2026 has further strengthened this link. In this, researchers from Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University studied more than 2200 elderly people for a long time.

What came out in the research?

In this research, it was seen that people who had anemia already had more Alzheimer’s related biomarkers in their blood. Additionally, they were also found to have a higher risk of developing dementia during follow-up. That means iron deficiency is not just a simple problem, but can also be a sign of mental diseases. According to the study, people who had both low hemoglobin and Alzheimer’s-related proteins like p-tau217 had the highest risk of dementia. This indicates that blood loss in the body and brain changes may be related to each other.

What is the problem due to iron deficiency?

Iron deficiency also affects the supply of oxygen in the body. When the brain does not get enough oxygen, its efficiency gradually begins to weaken. This is why anemia is now being seen not only as a physical but also as a neurological problem. Another interesting thing that came to light was that the risk of dementia due to anemia was seen to be higher in men than in women, whereas this problem is more common in women. Researchers believe that different biological reactions of the body may be responsible for this.
