If a user is thinking that he can use social media by hiding his identity, then such days are gone. A new research has revealed that AI model can identify a user only from the content he posts online. For this he does not need any personal identifier. Now AI models have become so powerful that they can easily identify the person behind a pseudonymous account and his other social media accounts.
AI models can identify accurately
In this study by Anthropic and ETH Zurich, researchers created an automated system that analyzes posts, comments and conversations. This method works on all user generated content. This system finds possible matches by extracting identity-related signals from the text by following a multi-step process. After this, it tries to find out by applying its reasoning whether two different accounts are linked to the same person. During testing, this model was successful in linking accounts created on platforms like Reddit and LinkedIn.
How does AI system identify the user?
According to the study, small details of the post can help in identifying the person. The user can be identified with the help of writing style, interest, location hint, education and topics etc. For example, this model analyzes a conversation and collects information about profession, location, tools used, background etc. and matches it with publicly available information to find out the person behind it. The more posts a user has, the easier it will be for this AI model to prove his identity.
Why is this study important?
This study has proved that now one cannot remain private by creating an account on social media under a pseudonym. This will have a greater impact on activists, journalists and other people with sensitive information who create accounts on social media and use them under some other name. However, this study also has some risks. The researcher says that governments can do surveillance in this way and cyber attackers can do detailed profiling to target a user.
