Jammu Machail Mata Temple: The temple of Holy Mother Machail in Kishtwar district of Jammu has been opened for darshan. Last year in the month of August, 69 people died tragically in a cloudburst near the temple of Mata Machail in Chishoti of Kishtwar district.
Darshan resumes in Machail Mata temple
The sacred Shri Machail Mata Temple, located in the spiritual region of Machail Valley in Kishtwar district, was reopened for pilgrims on the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi. With this, the annual Shri Machail Mata Yatra 2026 also began.
During this religious event, amidst religious rituals and a grand fair, the idol of Goddess Machail Mata (Durga) was shifted from the house of local priest Pahalwan Singh to the main temple amidst a huge crowd of devotees.
According to the administration, no one will be allowed to enter without registration. For this, counters will be set up for on-the-spot registration at Gauri Shankar Temple, Sarkot and Gulabgarh. It was informed that after obtaining permission, helicopter services will also be started.
Importance of Machail Mata Temple
Shri Machail Mata Yatra has deep religious significance and attracts lakhs of devotees from all over the country every year. The Divisional Commissioner appealed to all the pilgrims to completely follow the guidelines and safety instructions issued by the administration.
History of the temple
The history of this temple is believed to be linked to Zorawar Singh Kaluria’s conquest of Ladakh in 1834 AD. According to beliefs, before going to war, he had taken blessings of Mata Machail and after the victory, he became a deep devotee of Mata.
Every year in the month of August, the holy pilgrimage of Machail Mata is organized here, in which a large number of devotees from far and wide come for darshan. In the year 1987, Thakur Kulveer Singh of Bhaderwah started ‘Chhadi Yatra’. This journey starts from Chinot in Bhaderwah and goes to Machail and now it has become a major religious tradition.
