New Delhi. David Warner, one of the most explosive and controversial openers of Australian cricket, is once again in the headlines for the wrong reasons. Even after retiring from international cricket, Warner’s name has been linked to a big controversy off the field. Warner has been caught on charges of drunk driving in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. This incident has come to light when Warner is currently playing Pakistan Super League. According to News Corp report, this incident happened on Easter Sunday night. 39-year-old Warner was going towards his home in Maroubra in his van. On the way, Sydney Police had set up a checkpoint for ‘random breath testing’. The police noticed that a short distance before the checkpoint, a van suddenly stopped and started parking. Upon noticing suspicious activity, officers examined the vehicle and tested Warner on the spot, which came back positive.

According to reports, David Warner cooperated with the police and admitted that he was with a friend and drank three glasses of wine before driving. Police took him to Maroubra Police Station, where detailed testing found his blood alcohol level to be 0.104. The legal limit in Australia is 0.05, meaning Warner’s alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. He has been charged with ‘mid-range drink-driving’ and ordered to appear at Downing Center Local Court on 7 May.

David Warner will appear in court on May 7.

Return to Australia and accident amid PSL
The surprising thing is that David Warner is captaining Karachi Kings in Pakistan Super League these days. He returned to Australia for some time during the break in the middle of the tournament. Just a few days ago, on 2 April, he had scored a brilliant half-century during a match in Lahore. His form on the field of play is still intact, but his conduct off the field has once again raised question marks on his professional career. Recently Warner’s domestic T20 season was also excellent. In the Big Bash League, he scored runs at an average of 86.6 for Sydney Thunder and was also chosen as the captain of the tournament’s ‘Team of the Season’. However, Sydney Thunder has currently refused to comment on this latest controversy.

Brilliant career and shadow of controversies
David Warner’s career has been full of runs. It is equally surrounded by controversies. He scored 8786 runs in 112 Test matches for Australia, which also included a historic inning of 335 not out against Pakistan. After saying goodbye to international cricket in 2024, he is busy in commentary and franchise cricket. But his past is not leaving him. The infamous ‘Sandpaper Gate’ (ball tampering scandal) of 2018 is considered the darkest chapter of his career, due to which he was banned for life from captaincy (which was later lifted). Now, at the age of 39, this legal wrangle has put his professional commitments and advertising contracts under threat.

crisis over the future
If Warner is found guilty in the court, then he may face action like heavy fine and cancellation of driving license. Discipline is considered paramount in the sports world and such behavior is not expected from a former captain and legendary player. Karachi Kings and their other sponsors are awaiting the legal outcome of this case.
