What is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)? Know why the government is emphasizing on this new technology

What is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Amidst the increasing cyber threats in the digital world, keeping accounts secure only by relying on passwords is no longer enough. The solution to this problem is two-factor authentication, also known as 2FA. This is a security method in which two different types of identification are asked from the user to login to an app or website. This means that even after entering just the username and password, you still have to complete one more step. This technology confirms that the person accessing the account is who they claim to be. This makes it very difficult for hackers to break into someone's account.

Why is 2FA so important?

Nowadays cyber attacks have become smarter and more dangerous than before. In such a situation, 2FA works like a strong security shield. This system reduces reliance on passwords and provides additional security to the account. Even if a hacker gets access to your password, he cannot easily enter your account because he will have to complete the second verification step also. Especially this technique proves to be very helpful in preventing attacks like phishing.

How does two-factor authentication work?

When a user tries to login to a website or app, first of all he enters his general information like username and password. After this the system checks whether the given information is correct or not. As soon as the first step is completed, the user is asked for a second identity.

This is usually a one-time passcode (OTP) sent to his mobile phone. In some cases, this code can also be obtained through an authenticator app or security device. Only when the user enters this code correctly is he allowed to access the account. In this way, login is successful only after two different levels of verification are completed.

How to turn on 2FA?

This feature is not available in every website or app, but wherever this option is available, it must be activated. Usually the method of turning it on is quite easy. For example, on platforms like LinkedIn, you can turn it on in the Sign-in and Security section by going to Settings. Its steps may change slightly on different platforms but the process remains almost the same.

Why is the government emphasizing on this technology?

In view of the rapidly increasing cases of digital fraud in India, the government and regulatory bodies are now focusing on strengthening the security. Reserve Bank of India and other agencies are continuously advising users to adopt 2FA. The main reason for this is that password based security alone is now proving to be weak. Hackers obtain passwords through phishing, data theft and other methods. But with 2FA, it becomes very difficult for them to access the account. The government wants that this technology should be used more and more in banking, digital payment and other essential services so that the money and data of the common people can remain safe.

What are the benefits of 2FA?

This technology provides additional security to the users and reduces the possibility of account hacking to a great extent. Even if someone's password is leaked, login is not possible without second verification. Apart from this, it is also helpful in protecting against threats like phishing and online fraud. This is the reason why nowadays most banking apps and social media platforms are making this feature mandatory.
