Social Media Ban in Austria: The European country Austria is now preparing to take a big step regarding the online world of children. The government here is planning to ban the use of social media for children below 14 years of age. The purpose of this decision is said to be to protect children from the negative effects of digital platforms.
Why is the government taking such a step?
The government believes that nowadays social media platforms use such algorithms which keep children connected to the screen for a long time. This habit gradually turns into addiction, which affects their mental and physical health. Apart from this, sometimes children are exposed to such sensitive and inappropriate content which is not appropriate for their age.
When will this rule come into effect?
Although all three allies of the government have agreed on this proposal, the date for its implementation has not been decided yet. According to officials, a draft law on this can be prepared by the end of June. Only after this the further process will be decided.
Which platforms will be banned?
The government has made it clear that it will not take the name of any particular social media platform. Instead, it will be looked at which platforms use algorithms that are more addictive or contain inappropriate and sensitive content. Action will be taken on that basis.
Such initiatives are increasing in the world
Austria is not the only country which is taking steps in this direction. Earlier, Australia had imposed a ban on social media for children under 16 years of age. In France also, a similar rule has been approved for children below 15 years of age.
Debate has also started regarding this proposal. While on one hand it is being said that it is necessary for the safety of children, on the other hand some people are considering it as a curb on their digital freedom. However, not only in Austria but also in India, children are being adversely affected by excessive use of social media.
