A big and modern change has started in the school education of the country. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched the new curriculum based on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) of CBSE in New Delhi. This syllabus is being implemented from the academic session 2026–27, the objective of which is to prepare students for the technologies of the future. According to the information released by CBSE, this new syllabus has been prepared in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) and National Curriculum Framework (NCF 2023). Its focus shifts from traditional rote learning to understanding, skills and real-life application.
What will be in the new syllabus?
Under the new curriculum, students from classes 3 to 8 will be taught Computational Thinking and AI in a phased manner. For students of classes 3 to 5, CT will be combined with subjects like Mathematics and “The World Around Us (TWAU)”. At this stage children will be taught through workbooks, activities, games and puzzles, so that they can develop logical thinking and problem solving abilities. At the same time, for students of classes 6 to 8, CT will be included in all subjects and basic understanding of AI (AI literacy) will also be given. To make studies more practical at this level, emphasis will be laid on project based and worksheet based learning.
The new syllabus will be like this
According to CBSE, this syllabus has been prepared under a phased approach, in which the understanding of the students will be developed gradually. About 50 hours have been allotted for classes 3–5 and about 100 hours for classes 6–8. Its objective is to create a strong foundation in the students, so that they can perform better in AI and technical fields in future. The methods of teaching have also been completely changed in this course. Now studies will not be limited to books only, but will include methods like puzzles, projects, group work, discussion, debate and solving real life problems. Students will be motivated to understand the problems around them and find solutions to them. The role of teachers will also not be limited to just teaching, but they will also provide guidance and mentorship to the students.

The evaluation system has also been changed. From classes 3 to 5, assessment will be linked to core subjects such as Mathematics and TWAU, while from class 6 onwards students will be assessed on the basis of projects, presentations, assignments and journals. For this, teachers have been instructed to make clear and uniform evaluation criteria (rubrics).
When will the new syllabus be implemented in which class?
According to the new circular of CBSE, the syllabus of classes 11 and 12 has come into effect from April 1, 2026, while the revised syllabus of classes 9 and 10 was released on April 2. All schools have been instructed to download the new syllabus from the official website and share it with students and teachers and start preparations accordingly. However, some media reports have also revealed that many schools have only received the curriculum framework and the new books are not completely available. There is a shortage of books especially in class 9, due to which schools are temporarily starting studies on the basis of this framework.
