BCCI can change the central contract for Bumrah, a matter of Rs 2 crore
New Delhi. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has considered making changes in the salary structure of the annual player contract for 2025-26. According to reports, the board took the decision to remove the top A+ category because there were not enough eligible players for this category. This category for 2024-25 included Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja. Players of this grade get Rs 7 crore annually.
To come in the A+ category, a player must play in all three formats and must have a top-10 ranking in at least one format. Now Rohit and Kohli are playing only one format and Jadeja has retired from T20. Bumrah was the only candidate left. In such a situation, the board decided to abolish this category completely. Due to this, Bumrah and Jadeja were shifted to A category, where players get Rs 5 crore annually.
According to the report of Times of India, BCCI can compensate Bumrah for the loss of Rs 2 crore. He is performing consistently well in all formats. The purpose of this change is that players who perform consistently should not get less than the amount they got last year. According to TOI, a board source said, “The board is looking at how Bumrah can be compensated. It can be understood that reducing his fee from Rs 7 crore to Rs 5 crore would not be right. There are some other players too who have been downgraded despite good performances. There could be a change in the valuation of the contracts.”
India's T20 vice-captain Axar Patel's compensation may also be revised as he is an important part of the team's white-ball squad. Despite fulfilling the criteria set earlier by BCCI, he has been kept in Grade C, under which he will get Rs 1 crore. It is not clear whether the criteria have changed or not.
BCCI Annual Contract 2025-26
Last month, BCCI had given central contracts to a total of 30 players. Of these, only three players are in Grade A. Shubman Gill, Bumrah and Jadeja. 11 players are in Grade B and the rest are in Grade C. It is noteworthy that BCCI has not disclosed the salary structure of each category in the new contracts.
