Loco Pilot Medical Test Criteria : Every year lakhs of youth dream of becoming a loco pilot in Indian Railways. Due to good salary, government facilities and respectable job, it is counted among the best jobs in Railways. But to reach this post, merely passing the written examination is not enough. The candidate also has to prove completely fit in the medical test. Many times it happens that even the candidates who score well in the written examination are left out of selection due to minor deficiencies in the medical examination. What is the qualification to become a loco pilot?
To become a loco pilot in Indian Railways, a candidate must have passed 10th and 12th. Along with this, one should have two years ITI certificate in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Wireman, Automobile or related trade. The minimum age of the candidate has been fixed at 18 years and maximum age at 30 years. Reserved category candidates get relaxation in maximum age limit as per government rules.
How is the selection done?
To become a loco pilot, a candidate has to go through the Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) recruitment process conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). In this, first of all there is CBT-1 and CBT-2 examination. After this, psychometric or aptitude test, medical test and document verification is done. Candidates who successfully pass all the stages are called for training.
What are the parameters of medical test to be fulfilled for Loco Pilot?
1. Vision Test – Eye test is most important for a loco pilot. A1 medical category is applicable for ALP post in Railways, which is considered the strictest. In this, distance vision of both the eyes should be 6/6. Glasses or contact lenses are not permitted for this position. Apart from this, it is also important to recognize colors correctly and be clearly visible at night. The candidate is also tested whether he can identify the red, green and yellow lights of railway signals without any difficulty.
2. Hearing Test – The loco pilot has to pay constant attention to the sound of the engine, horn, wireless messages and sounds coming from the track. Therefore, it is important to hear normally from both ears. In the medical examination, it is seen whether the candidate has any kind of hearing problem or ear infection.
3. Physical fitness – Loco pilot has to work continuously sitting in the engine for many hours. Many times duty has to be done even in bad weather and difficult conditions. Therefore, in medical tests, body balance, functionality of hands and legs, condition of the spinal cord, blood sugar and general physical fitness are examined.
4. Mental Health – In the job of a loco pilot, it is important to remain alert all the time. Therefore, the mental health of the candidate is also checked. During the medical test, it is seen whether the candidate can take right decisions in stressful situations, how focused his attention remains and whether he can handle situations like nervousness or not.
5. Heart and respiratory test – Railways also ensure that the candidate can work for a long time without any problem. For this, heart function, condition of lungs and ability to breathe are examined.

Where is the first posting after training?
After passing the medical test, the candidates are not given the responsibility of directly driving the train. First of all they have to complete railway training. After completion of training, candidates are appointed to the post of Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP). Initially they are usually deployed in goods trains. On the basis of experience and good performance, they are later given the responsibility of passenger trains and then express or premium trains.
How much salary do you get?
According to the Seventh Pay Commission, the starting basic salary of Assistant Loco Pilot is Rs 19,900 per month. After getting promotion and becoming a senior loco pilot, the basic salary can be Rs 35,000 to Rs 60,000 or more. After adding dearness allowance and other allowances, the total in-hand salary can reach around Rs 40,000 to Rs 80,000 per month. Apart from the basic salary, the loco pilot also gets Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance, Night Duty Allowance, overtime payment and running allowance based on kilometers driven.
