Former Indian all-rounder Ifan Pathan warns Sanju Samson
New Delhi. Talking about Sanju Samson’s performance for India, it is completely black or white, there is no middle path. His T20 International career is like a car which can be driven either in first gear or straight in fifth. Its root lies in his bad beginning. Samson looks quite nervous in the beginning, and that is why his account is full of single-digit scores.
Sanju Samson As soon as his confidence returns, the movement of the ball decreases a little and he starts hitting some shots correctly, everything becomes easier. The real problem is that Samson is not able to reach that stage consistently. However, it is not just a matter of nervousness, but there are some shortcomings in the technique of the 31-year-old batsman.
Sanju Samson’s off-side weakness
In two of his last three outings, Samson has been out while trying to play a shot on the off-side. Against Ireland’s Jai Mundra, he edged the ball and played it on his stumps. That ball was well outside the off stump, almost on the line of the sixth or seventh stump. Even against England’s Saqib Mahmood, the ball was almost on the line of the sixth stump. In Durham, Samson had already shuffled to the left, which gave him extra space, but his bat face closed more than necessary and the ball went into the hands of Tom Banton standing at backward point. According to Irfan Pathan, it was not just a bad luck out, but part of a pattern. The former Indian all-rounder believes that the line outside the off stump keeps Samson bound. He tries to play the ball hard, due to which his bat face gets closed. This is why he keeps getting caught out in the slips, behind the wicketkeeper or square. According to Pathan, England had understood this weakness very well and Saqib Mahmood continued bowling outside the off stump until Samson was out.
Change technology or you will be changed.
Pathan said on GeoHotstar, “You should keep the ball away from Sanju Samson against him. Even if the ball is not swinging, it is important to maintain the line outside the off-stump because his bat face is closed. When he tries to play in the off-side, sometimes the bat face gets open. That is why we have seen him getting caught out many times in the slips, behind the wicketkeeper and square. England’s strategy was also the same. They played in the field. Instead, the bowler bowled on the same line and kept a slightly shorter length, where Samson was out. It is clear that England will try to capitalize on this in the next few matches. It will be interesting to see how Sanju changes his technique for this.
