Indian women’s team qualifies for 2028 Olympic Games

New Delhi. The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have revealed the qualification system for cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles (LA) Olympics. A total of six teams each will participate in both men’s and women’s T20 events. No team has qualified yet in the men’s category, but four teams have confirmed their place in the women’s category.

This will be a relief news for the Indian women’s team after the crushing defeat at the hands of Australia at Lord’s because after being out of the World Cup, Harmanpreet’s army now has only the Olympic Games in front of it where it can heal its wounds by performing better.

4 teams confirmed

Based on the rankings of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, ICC and IOC have declared Australia, Great Britain (England), India and South Africa qualified for the LA28 Olympics. Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania were guaranteed one place each, and the highest-ranked teams from these continents achieved qualification.

Host not decided yet

The fifth spot has been given to the host country America, but with a condition that if America does not remain in the top-15 in the ICC T20I rankings at any time between June 30, 2026 and December 31, 2026, then on March 1, 2027, this spot will be given to the next highest non-qualified team in the ICC rankings. The sixth and final spot will be decided through the first ICC Olympic Qualifier to be held in 2027, in which 8 teams will participate.

What about West Indies?

Although West Indies was ahead of India in the Women’s T20 World Cup, despite being a member of the ICC, it has not been recognized by the IOC National Olympic Committee (NOC), because it is a group of 13 independent countries. For this reason West Indies cannot directly achieve Olympic quota. However, if West Indies remains in the top-8 in the ICC T20I rankings till 31 December 2026, then the Caribbean Qualifier will be held. The winner of this tournament will get a chance to play in the ICC Olympic Qualifier 2027 and from there the way will open for a place in the LA28 Olympics.

LA28 Format of women’s cricket in Olympics

All six teams will be able to choose a squad of 15 players each, as happens in the current Women’s World Cup. The teams will be divided into two groups of 3-3. Each team will play two matches against the teams of its group and also two matches against the teams of the other group. The top two teams in the points table will compete for the gold and silver medals, while the third and fourth placed teams will play the bronze medal match. All matches will be played in Pomona, which is the home ground of Los Angeles Knight Riders in Major League Cricket.
