Does Smoking Really Make Your Voice Deeper: Many people believe that by continuously smoking cigarettes, the voice becomes heavy and different. In films and in common life too, the voice of a smoker is often associated with heaviness. But does smoking really affect the voice? According to experts the answer is yes.
What do experts say?
According to clevelandclinic, an organization providing information about health, Dr. Candace Hrelak, an expert in diseases related to ear, nose and throat, says that smoking can directly affect the quality, tone and heaviness of the voice. In fact, hundreds of chemicals are present in the smoke of cigarettes or other tobacco products. When a person inhales smoke, it first passes through the throat and vocal tubes and reaches the lungs. This is the reason why irritation and swelling can start in these parts.
What is the effect of continuous smoking?
Continuous smoking can increase the problems of sore throat, phlegm and cough. Due to repeated coughing, the sound producing tubes collide with each other, due to which the swelling in them increases further. This swelling can gradually make the voice heavy and hoarse. According to experts, its effect can be seen quickly in people who sing. While playing high notes, there is more pressure on the sound producing tubes. If there is already swelling in them, then the change in voice becomes clearly felt.
What is its effect?
The effect of smoking is not limited to just making the voice hoarse. Prolonged tobacco consumption can cause persistent swelling in the throat. In some cases, the voice starts becoming dull or does not come out properly for several days. Apart from this, there may also be a problem like growth of flesh inside the throat, due to which there may be difficulty in breathing. In serious situations, operation may be required.

Experts also warn that continuous smoking can increase the risk of throat cancer. In the initial stages, its signs may be visible in the form of changes in voice. If a person’s voice remains heavy or changed for more than three weeks, he should immediately consult a doctor. As far as other intoxicating smoke or vapor products are concerned, experts believe that not enough research has been done on it yet. However, it is definitely believed that any kind of smoke or chemical can affect the throat and vocal cords.
The good thing is that after a few weeks of quitting smoking, improvement in voice is visible. Drinking enough water, taking care of the throat and staying away from smoking can help in getting the voice back to normal.
