How Dangerous Is Hantavirus Infection: Suspected Hantavirus infection on a luxury cruise traveling in the Atlantic Ocean has raised concerns. According to the World Health Organization, three people have died in this incident, while one case has been confirmed and five other suspected cases are under investigation. This spread on this cruise named MV Hondius has raised the question that how dangerous is this virus and how is it possible to prevent it.
What is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is not a single virus but the name of a group of viruses, which are mainly found in mammals like rats that eat food by gnawing. It does not spread directly to humans, but infection occurs when dried particles of feces, urine or saliva of infected rats get mixed in the air and enter the body through breath. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, this is its most common way of spreading.

According to data from the National Institutes of Health, about 1.5 lakh cases of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome are reported every year, more than half of which are recorded in China. At the same time, about 890 cases have been confirmed in America between 1993 and 2023. However, one of its strains, Seoul virus, is found in many parts of the world.

What is the biggest challenge of this virus?
The biggest challenge of this virus is that there is no definite treatment for it. Doctors usually treat the patient based on their symptoms, which may require oxygen therapy, ventilation support and, in severe cases, even dialysis. Many patients have to be admitted to the ICU, especially when the infection rapidly affects the lungs.
When did this come into discussion?
According to BBC report, recently a case came into discussion in February 2025, when Betsy Arakawa, wife of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, also died due to respiratory disease related to Hanta virus. Investigation found that rats’ nests were present around his house, which increased the possibility of infection. According to experts, the most effective way to protect against this virus is to stay away from animals like rats. It is very important to close the entry and exit points of rats in the house or workplace, wear a mask and gloves while cleaning, and do not touch the dirt directly with hands.
Why are there problems in cruise?
The risk of such infections increases in closed places like cruises because many people live together in a limited space. In such a situation, if the infection spreads, it becomes difficult to control it.
