Can Dark Skin Become Fair Permanently: Can a black person really be white? This question is not new. For years, the market, beauty industry and pharmaceutical companies have been selling people the dream that skin color can be changed permanently with the help of some creams, injections, peels or treatments. But the truth is quite different from this. The reality is that it is not possible to completely change a person’s natural skin tone and make him permanently fair.
Can we really be fair?
According to a medical review by Dr. Shelthiel Sathe, the color of our skin is mainly determined by a pigment called melanin. This melanin decides whether someone’s skin will be dark, wheatish or fair. The amount of melanin, its distribution and the genetic makeup of the body, all these things together determine the skin tone. This is the reason why a person’s natural color cannot be completely changed by applying any cream or doing one or two treatments. Yes, the excess darkness seen on the skin due to problems like sunlight, tanning, pigmentation, blemishes or melasma can definitely be reduced to some extent.
What things are affected?
This is where it becomes important to understand the real difference. Whitening the skin and making the skin a little brighter, cleaner or even tone are two different things. Dermatologists also believe that no treatment can magically change your natural skin color. Yes, if the skin has sun tan, acne scars, age spots, pigmentation or dullness, then options like chemical peel, microdermabrasion, laser toning, retinol or vitamin C can help in improving the skin tone. But accepting these as the formula for permanent fairness is the biggest mistake.

Can this also cause problems?
In fact, the fairness industry has been based on this misconception for a long time. Many products available in the market make tall claims that they will improve the complexion or lighten the skin by several shades in a few days. But many of these claims are misleading. Many instant fairness products also contain ingredients which can harm the skin in the long run. These may include skin thinning, allergies, irritation, blemishes, increased sensitivity to sunlight and in some cases even rebound pigmentation. This means that it is clear that no black person can make his natural skin tone permanently fair. Yes, proper skincare, sunscreen, healthy diet and some treatments done as per doctor’s advice can definitely improve the texture, glow and overall look of the skin.
