Chinaman bowler, who played in IPL in 2016-17, today runs coaching to earn his living.

New Delhi. Behind the glitter and glamor of IPL, there are many such stories hidden which are as shocking as they are interesting. One such story is that of the mysterious “Chinaman” bowler Shivil Kaushik. Who surprised the batsmen with his strange action, but equally quickly disappeared from the world of cricket.

The 2016 Indian Premier League season, when Gujarat Lions gave a chance to an unknown bowler named Kaushik. Everyone was shocked to see Shivil Kaushik, who bowled with long hair, strange run-up and unique use of his wrist. “Chinaman” style i.e. left-arm unorthodox spin, which is rarely seen in cricket, was presented in a different way by Civil. In his debut season, he performed brilliantly in some matches and troubled big batsmen. It seemed that Indian cricket has got a new mysterious spinner, but in the world of cricket, as soon as recognition comes, so do the tests.

Game over in two seasons

The 2017 season proved to be a turning point for Shivil as he faced one of the most dangerous batsmen in the world, Virat Kohli, in a match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. In that match, Kohli scored 30 runs in one over of Civil. This over not only changed the course of the match, but perhaps also of Civil’s career. It is said that after that one over the teams lost confidence in him. He did not find any buyer in the IPL auction and gradually he disappeared from the big stage of cricket. This story is not just about one bad over, but also about the pressure that is on every player in this league where one mistake can cost the entire career.

Bowler living a life of anonymity

Today Shivil Kaushik is earning his living by giving cricket coaching in Bangalore. The player who was once considered a future star on the big stage, is now teaching the same game to young players in which he had once made his mark. However, to say that only Virat Kohli ended his career may be a bit of an exaggeration. The reality is that consistent performance in the IPL is what keeps a player going; one or two good seasons is not enough. Shivil’s story teaches us that cricket is not just a game of talent but also a game of consistency, mental strength and the right opportunity and sometimes, just one over can change the whole story.
