New Delhi. Every cricketer dreams of not only playing for the country but also becoming an important part of the team and contributing to many memorable victories. Especially in India, where cricket is not considered just a game but is worshiped like a religion, small children grow up with the dream of becoming a successful cricketer. However, not everyone gets success in this. Some become heroes while others, despite being talented, are able to play only a few matches. We have brought the story of one such cricketer, whose international career lasted only for 7 days. Within a week of his debut, this star also played his last international match. This name is- Phil Emery.
Phil Emery was a reliable wicketkeeper for New South Wales, who spent most of his career under the shadow of the legendary Ian Healy. In domestic cricket, he was highly respected for his excellent wicketkeeping and temperament, but he got very few opportunities at the international level. He himself would never have thought that after playing just two matches, he would say goodbye to cricket for Australia.
Luck shined in 1994
Phil Emery’s fortunes changed in 1994. Ian Healy broke his finger during the Pakistan tour and Australia immediately needed a wicketkeeper. Emery was suddenly called to Karachi. October 30, 1994, was a happy day for Emery and his family because Emery had worked hard for this day. Emery got a chance to debut for Australia. He was included in the playing-11 of the ODI match against Pakistan. He also made his Test debut just two days later. He played the role of wicketkeeper batsman in the test match against Pakistan played between November 1 and November 5. However, this match proved to be the last match of his international career.
During this only Test match, Emery’s thumb on his left hand was broken and while keeping, a ball also hit him in the face. However, despite this he did not give up and continued playing even with the injury. As soon as Ian Healy recovered and returned to the Australian team, Emery did not get a place and he had to return to domestic cricket. After this, he never got a chance to play for the national team and his international career was limited to one ODI and one Test.
Overall cricket career
Phil Emery’s overall career lasted more than 10 years. Before retiring in 1999, he took 337 catches and made 47 stumpings in 121 first-class matches. He was also very talented as a left-handed batsman. Many times he came down the order and played very important innings for the team. He scored 17 half-centuries and one century in his career. He scored a total of 3292 first class runs at an average of over 26. He often scored runs when his team needed it the most.
