Rectal Cancer: Why are more youth dying from rectal cancer, what changes are needed in lifestyle?

Why Rectal Cancer Is Increasing In Young Adults: For many years, colorectal cancer was considered a disease of the elderly. Health advice also mostly focused on testing older people, while younger people were considered to be at low risk. But now the picture seems to be changing, and this change is raising concerns. Let us tell you what new has come out regarding this.

Shocking revelations in the study

A study led by Mithili Menon Pathiyal of the State University of New York Upstate Medical University, presented at Digestive Disease Week (DDW 2026), reported that deaths from rectal cancer are increasing rapidly in younger people. This increase has been seen especially in people aged between mid-30s to early 40s.

How are death figures changing?

The researcher analyzed the data from 1999 to 2023. Records of people between 20 and 44 years were included in this. Data over such a long period of time helped in understanding how the death toll changed. The results were quite worrying. Overall, the number of deaths due to colorectal cancer has increased, but the death rate due to rectal cancer is increasing at a much faster rate. In many groups this increase was found to be two to three times more than that of colon cancer.

Study on different communities

The study also revealed that the impact is different in different communities. Deaths from rectal cancer increased most rapidly among Hispanic people, while this increase was also seen among people living in the western parts of America. This indicates that social, environmental or lifestyle factors may play a role. To understand the future, the researcher also made predictions till 2035. According to this, if the situation does not change, the cases of death due to rectal cancer may increase in the coming years. Especially the risk will remain highest among people aged 35 to 44 years.

What is the biggest reason?

In this study, delayed identification has been considered an important reason. Young people often ignore the symptoms of cancer. Doctors also sometimes consider the possibility of cancer in youth to be less. Like bleeding from the anus or change in the habit of cleaning the stomach, these are often considered as minor problems. For this reason, the disease is detected late in young patients. While in the elderly, treatment starts within a month of the symptoms appearing, the youth keep waiting for several months. This delay can make the situation more serious.
