AI Cyber Fraud: The methods of cyber fraud are changing rapidly in the country. After cases like digital arrest, now a new and more dangerous method has emerged in which artificial intelligence and tampering with Aadhaar data is being used. A similar case came to light in Ahmedabad, Gujarat where cyber crime police have arrested four accused.

How the whole matter came to light

The matter came to light when a businessman from Thaltej area lodged a complaint that the mobile number linked to his Aadhaar was changed without his knowledge. This change was not normal but a well-planned cyber fraud was going on behind it.

This is how the fraud was carried out

Investigation revealed that the accused made changes in the Aadhaar records by removing the victim’s mobile number and adding their own number. After this, the OTP coming to them started reaching the thugs directly. Through this he gained access to sensitive accounts like banking apps and DigiLocker. Not only this, the fraudsters also changed the KYC details due to which the complete control came into their hands and the real user was not even aware of it.

Dangerous use of AI

The most shocking thing about this case was that the fraudsters also took the help of AI tools. They prepared short video clips from the victim’s photo, in which slight facial movements were visible. These clips were used to deceive biometric verification systems which are usually based on liveness detection.

Access to bank accounts and loans

Using the victim’s information, the fraudsters tried to open accounts in three different banks through e-KYC. Apart from this, a loan of Rs 25,000 was also taken in his name from Jio Payments Bank. The investigation also revealed that the accused misused the Aadhaar update kit. These kits are used through Common Service Center (CSC) but they were obtained illegally and changes were being made in the Aadhaar records.

What to do if you are a victim of cyber fraud

If you suspect any kind of online fraud, it is very important to take immediate action. You can call the helpline number 1930 or file a complaint on the cyber crime portal. Also, lodge a report at your nearest police station and immediately contact the bank to secure your account and cards.
