Dr Harish Bhatia, a respiratory disease expert, told TOI that people come to him every day who claim they are absolutely fine. They think that everything is normal, whereas in reality changes have started within the body. He says that the lungs do not complain in the initial stages. They clean the air, repair small damages and withstand pressure for long periods of time. But the toxic elements that enter the body through smoking every day, their effects gradually accumulate.
The problem is that when the body adjusts to a situation, we think everything is fine. Just like a noise gradually becomes a habit, similarly the body also starts tolerating this harm, but this does not mean that the harm has stopped.
Does feeling okay make everything okay?
According to Dr Bhatia, feeling fine is not a sign that you are safe, but it shows that the body is still taking care of itself. Many changes keep happening inside, the respiratory tubes gradually start narrowing, the elasticity of the lungs decreases, the blood vessels start hardening and the flow of oxygen in the body gets affected. All this continues for years without any pain or obvious signs.
The problem develops gradually
Dr. Pankaj Khatana, who is a common disease expert, says that diseases related to smoking do not come suddenly, but develop gradually. This includes chronic respiratory diseases, lung cancer and heart disease. These are often detected when the body has already suffered a lot of damage. Reports from the World Health Organization and the Health Ministry of India also show that tobacco-related diseases are a major cause of preventable deaths.

The most dangerous thing is that sometimes the first sign is serious, like heart attack or paralysis. Dr. Khatana says that by the time symptoms appear, the body has suffered a lot of damage. This is why thinking that I am fine can be risky.

The good thing is that quitting smoking is beneficial at any age. Within a few days, heart beat and blood pressure start becoming normal, within months the functioning of the lungs improves and with time the risk of serious diseases also reduces.
