- Companies like Google, Apple, Microsoft are supporting Passkey.
Password Vs Passkey: In the digital era, a large part of our lives has shifted to online platforms. Password is required for login everywhere from banking to social media. But remembering passwords again and again, keeping them safe and protecting them from hacking is not an easy task. A new system, Passkeys, has emerged as a solution to this problem.
What are passkeys?
Passkeys is a login method that does not require you to type a password. This technology verifies your identity through biometric data present on your device such as fingerprint, face unlock or PIN. This means that now the hassle of remembering passwords is about to end.
How does this system work?
The passkey is actually based on public-key cryptography. In this, two types of “keys” are made, one public and one private. The public key is saved on the server while the private key remains safe on your device and never goes out. When you login, your device confirms your identity using the private key. This makes it very difficult for hackers to access your account.
Why more secure than password?
Passwords often become weak, repeated or leaked, which increases the risk of hacking. There is neither any password in the passkey nor can it be stolen. This system is also considered safe from phishing attacks to a great extent because the user is not entering his password on any fake website. Apart from this, a different cryptographic signature is created for every login, which further strengthens the security.
Which companies adopted?
Today many big tech companies have started adopting this new technology. Giants like Google, Apple and Microsoft are providing passkey support on their platforms. This method may become more common in the future. Although the passkey is considered quite safe, it also has some challenges. If your device is lost or damaged, accessing your account may be difficult.
However, companies are also providing features like backup option and cloud sync for this. Passkey technology can bring a big change in digital security. This not only makes login easier but also reduces the risk of hacking to a great extent.
