‘I found Aamir more intelligent…’, this is how Ameesha Patel got ‘Mangal Pandey’, Aishwarya Rai was her first choice

Aamir Khan found Ameesha intelligent

In a conversation with Bollywood Bubble, Ameesha said on Aishwarya leaving the film and getting a chance, ‘Aamir had seen my interview with BBC and he found me very intelligent. We did an interview together in Delhi. While the camera was being set up, we were playing ‘Noughts and Crosses’ and talking about books, which helped us tune in well.

Leaf cut after selection in Lagaan

Apart from this, Ameesha also said about the film Lagaan, ‘Even before this, I and Aamir had met many times, because I had given a screen test for ‘Lagaan’ and I was also selected. But when I was shooting for ‘Kaho Na… Pyaar Hain’ in New Zealand, my manager told me that I had been removed from Lagaan because Ashutosh Gowarikar felt that my eyes looked too educated for the role of a village girl and I was also very fair.

Aishwarya Rai openly told the truth

In a 2004 interview, after being out of the film, Aishwarya had also said, ‘The interesting thing is that people remember the word ‘replace’, but in reality the situation was completely different. There were some arguments between the producer and my agents. Later the producer also apologized to me because the way he spoke in the media was not right.

Producer removed Aishwarya from the film

Let us tell you that the role of ‘Jwala’ in ‘Mangal Pandey: The Rising’ was first offered to Aishwarya. But later reports came that there was an argument between them regarding fees. According to Telegraph reports, producer Bobby Bedi had said, ‘We removed Aishwarya Rai Bachchan from the film because she wanted to renegotiate her fees after signing the agreement and wanted to double it.’ He had initially signed the film for around Rs 1.5 crore, while Aamir Khan was getting around Rs 7 crore. After Aishwarya was out of the project, this role went to Ameesha Patel.
