India has won the T20 World Cup title twice in a row. Team India had created history under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma in 2024 and under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav in 2026. Now the discussion regarding 2028 T20 World Cup has started. According to some media reports, the selectors have made up their mind that they want to see Shreyas Iyer as the new T20 captain. But what does Team India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir have to say on this subject?
What does Gautam Gambhir want?
According to media reports, Gautam Gambhir wants to extend his contract as coach till 2028 T20 World Cup. His current contract is till 2027 ODI World Cup. Besides this, news has also come out that Gambhir is in favor of keeping Suryakumar Yadav as T20 captain.
In the last few months, Suryakumar Yadav has been under criticism due to his poor form. Suryakumar scored 84 runs against USA in T20 World Cup 2026. Apart from that, his father remained silent throughout the tournament. His average in the last eight T20 innings is not even 20. Despite this, Gautam Gambhir wants to maintain faith in him. Gambhir wants Surya to remain the captain of Team India till the 2028 T20 World Cup.
Shreyas vs Suryakumar, whose form is better?
There is a huge difference in the form of Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav in IPL 2026. Shreyas has been excellent as a captain so far and Punjab Kings have not lost a single match in the tournament so far. Whereas Shreyas has so far scored 208 runs in 6 matches at a good average of 52. On the other hand, Suryakumar Yadav’s poor form continues in IPL also. While playing for MI, he has so far scored only 106 runs in 5 matches.
