Kolkata’s 5th defeat but Varun Chakraborty’s record century, becomes the first Indian

Varun Chakravarthy has become the first Indian bowler to take 100 wickets for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. He achieved this success against Gujarat Titans on Friday 17 April. The team had to face 5th consecutive defeat this season, hence Varun’s achievement faded.

New Delhi. The winning account of Kolkata Knight Riders team in the Indian Premier League 2026 has not been opened yet. After playing 6 matches, the team has faced consecutive defeats. Varun Chakraborty entered the record books on Friday, April 17 by becoming the first Indian bowler to take 100 wickets for KKR in the IPL. This spinner from Tamil Nadu completed a century of wickets for Kolkata by dismissing Jos Buttler in the innings of Gujarat Titans.
Varun is overall the third bowler for Kolkata Knight Riders to take 100 or more wickets in IPL. Sunil Narine holds the record for taking most wickets in IPL for KKR. This legendary West Indies spinner has taken 196 wickets in 194 IPL matches while playing in the ongoing match against Gujarat Titans. After him comes the name of Andre Russell. Russell completed his IPL career by taking 122 wickets in 133 matches for Kolkata Knight Riders.
Narine also holds the record of taking most wickets for a single team in IPL. This former West Indies spinner has played 194 matches for Kolkata Knight Riders since his IPL debut in 2012 and has taken 196 wickets. India’s Jasprit Bumrah is in second place with 183 wickets for Mumbai Indians in 150 IPL matches.
Varun Chakraborty, the joint-highest wicket taker in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, could not take a single wicket for Kolkata Knight Riders in the first three matches of this season. On 29 March, they gave away 48 runs in four overs against Mumbai Indians, on 2 April, SRH batsmen scored 31 runs in their two overs and on 14 April, they gave away 26 runs in three overs against CSK.
