Every year lakhs of students appear for competitive examinations. Some with the dream of a government job, some with the hope of getting admission in a good college, and some with the hope of getting a scholarship. In the examination hall, everyone’s attention is on the questions, but very few people pay attention to the thing on which the real decision is taken, that is the OMR sheet. This is the paper on which even your small mark decides your marks. Many times, even after giving correct answers, students lose marks just because they did not fill the circle on OMR correctly.
OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) sheet is a special type of answer sheet, in which students enter their answers by filling in the circles with pen or pencil. Later these sheets are checked by machine. The machine does not read your handwriting, it only sees which circle has a deep mark and which does not. That is, if you chose the correct answer, but the circle is lightly filled, then the machine considers it empty.
How does the OMR machine read your sheet?
According to reports, when your OMR sheet goes into the machine, first of all a bright light is shone on it. Where the circle is full, less light is returned due to the pencil or ink, whereas more light is returned from the empty space. The machine catches this difference. There are many small sensors installed in it, which read several columns simultaneously.
These sensors recognize only the balls made at fixed places. If the mark goes out of the circle or remains faint, the machine cannot recognize it. After this the software decides which circle is filled and prepares the result by matching it with the answer key. If two circles are filled in a question, then the software considers it as a mistake and makes it wrong.

How does a small mistake become a big loss?
In competitive examinations, the cut-off is often decided by one or two marks. In such a situation, even a small mistake made on OMR can prove costly. Filling the circle lightly, making a crooked mark in a hurry, filling two options, using the wrong pen, or folding the sheet, all these reasons can make even your correct answer wrong. The machine doesn’t look at how hard you worked, it only looks at the depth of the mark.
What is the importance of position in OMR sheet?
Small black marks are made on the corners and edges of the OMR sheet. From these the machine knows whether the sheet is straight or not. If the sheet is bent, creased, or smudged, the machine may misread the entire sheet. Therefore it is very important to keep the OMR sheet clean and straight.
What things should be kept in mind while filling OMR sheet?
According to media reports, fill the circle on OMR immediately after solving every question. Fill the circle completely and deeply. Use only the pen or pencil that is specified in the instructions. Fill in only one circle per question. Do not bend the sheet, do not allow it to get wet. Do not mark outside the circle. Fill the roll number and booklet code very carefully, because a mistake here can also affect the result.
