Recently, Yuvraj Singh shared an interesting anecdote related to this historical event in former England captain Michael Vaughan’s show The Overlap Cricket, which perhaps very few people know.
When Broad’s father asked for a signed jersey
Yuvraj told that after that match, Stuart Broad’s father Chris Broad, who was the match referee at that time, came to meet him and jokingly said, “You have ended my son’s career.” To this Yuvraj replied, Sir, I too have been hit for five sixes once, I can understand how it feels. After this, Chris Broad asked Yuvraj to give a signed jersey for his son. Yuvraj Singh got a special special on his India jersey. Message written: I have also been hit by five sixes, I know how it feels, hope that you will become the best in future. This message not only shows the spirit of the game but also shows the respect of one player towards another player.
But what did Broad do with the jersey?
Yuvraj further revealed that he recently came to know that when Chris Broad gave that jersey to Stuart, he threw it in the dustbin in anger. However, Yuvraj justified it completely and said that any player can do this in that situation. Yuvraj Singh also praised Stuart Broad a lot. He said that after the incident of that one over, Broad controlled himself and made it his strength.
Broad went on to take more than 600 wickets in Test cricket and became one of England’s most successful bowlers. Yuvraj called him a “legendary” bowler.
This entire incident is not just a story of six sixes, but is also an example of sportsmanship, struggle and comeback. On one hand, the historic performance of Yuvraj and on the other hand, Broad learning from that defeat and becoming a great player, both make this story more special.
