Why Are Coconuts Banned In Flights: Air travel has its own rules and restrictions. These include prohibition on carrying sharp objects, large quantities of liquids and flammable items. But there are some rules which sound strange. The ban on carrying coconuts is also one of them. Coconut is generally used in religious purposes, food and daily needs, so people are surprised to know that it is not allowed to be taken in flights.
Why is it banned?
Actually, coconut which looks simple can pose many types of risks. The biggest reason is the oil present in it. Dried coconut, also known as copra, has a high oil content and can be easily flammable. If it comes in contact with excessive heat or any spark, the risk of fire may increase. According to the safety standards of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), substances that have a risk of fire or self-heating are not allowed to be carried on flights. Dry coconut can fall in this category. Even a small fire in an aircraft can become a big problem, hence precautions are taken beforehand for safety.

Dry coconut is considered dangerous
Apart from this, the coconut itself can also become hot under certain circumstances. Chemical reactions take place slowly in some things rich in oil, due to which heat is generated in them and there can be a possibility of fire. This is the reason why dry coconut is considered dangerous. Another reason is related to air pressure. There is a change in pressure during flight, which can affect objects that are filled with liquid or air. Both are present in coconut. In such a situation, there is a possibility of it bursting or leaking due to change in pressure, which can cause problems.
Security check is also a reason
Security check is also a big reason. At the airport, every item is checked through X-ray scanning, but the hard outer shell of the coconut does not allow it to be clearly visible what is inside it. This may raise suspicion to the security agencies, hence such goods are prevented from being carried. Apart from this, coconut is also a solid and heavy object. If there are shocks or turbulence during flight, it may fall here and there and cause harm. Although this is not the main reason, but it is also taken into consideration for security reasons.
